“my strength” - what’s all that about?
I hate rape as much as the next person who hates rape more than anything hates rape, but I don’t think it’s a sign of strength to be like ‘ok I’ll cop it on the chin and use all my strength not to rape this person.’
That’s saying that people saying no is a major challenge men have to strive to overcome and we should reward their ‘strength’ for being able to have the opportunity to rape someone and then not. That’s just silly. Also it shouldn’t take all this willpower and strength to not rape anyway, not raping shouldn’t be a demanding challenge. They say ‘no’ you say ‘fair call’ or similar.
I agree with you Lydia but the point of advertising isn’t always to be right - it’s to change the way people think or act, without making them brush it off. Making people see not raping someone as more macho or manly, as stupid as it is, strikes me as an awesome tactic which might just work for a few guys I know. Frankly, most people who commit rape definitely do not agree with you and so anything effectively targeting that audience will not be effective with you. That is a compliment.
I would rather an ad I didn’t agree with lessening the risk of rape than one I wholly agreed with which didn’t get through to the people it really needed to.
— This makes me happy. I want this campaign EVERYWHERE.
